About this pack

The first Model 3 Long Range pack held 4,416 Panasonic 2170 cells in four modules. Two modules carry 25 bricks and two carry 23, for 96 bricks in series, and each brick groups 46 cells in parallel.

Capacity figures for this pack disagree. EPA documents cited by 42HOW list 350 V and 230 Ah, about 80.5 kWh. The Munro teardown described a 75 kWh pack, and the Akkuwiki lists the Panasonic 3 at 77.8 kWh. All three are shown here; none has been silently chosen.

Charging, advantages and tradeoffs

Peak DC charging

Unknown

No verified charging curve for this pack is in the database yet. Curves vary with temperature, state of charge and software, so we only publish curves backed by repeatable measurements.

Advantages

  • The Munro teardown found closely matched cell modules and praised the pack's engineering. [3]

Tradeoffs

  • The cells are glued in place, which makes replacing individual cells difficult. [3]

Identification

How to tell if your car has it

  • European cars: the variant field (D.2) of the registration certificate or COC reads E3D or E3CD for this pack family.
  • VIN prefix 5YJ indicates a Fremont-built car.
  • The part number on the high-voltage battery label and Tesla service records are definitive. A VIN alone does not encode the cell supplier or pack code.

History

Lineage in the Panasonic 2170 family
